Animation is increasingly popular as website designs try to appeal to an audience that expects more and more visual interest and multimedia.

Typically animation refers to changing screen effects rather than images moving around the page but everything is possible using today's technologies.

Historically animation originally used single graphics like animated gifs for this effect. This was then followed by a phase where flash was used - until SEO became more important and it was found that flash is quite SEO-unfriendly and difficult and expensive to maintain.

Today we use javascript to animate pages. Javascript can do basically anything that can be imagined. It is also a straightforward matter to integrate databases with the visual effects so for example sliding or fading images can be shown from an editable (uploadable and changeable by the editor) set of images and captions.

Javascript also allows advanced hover effects - where as visitors hover over specific fields - other things in other areas of the page can spring to life or change their appearance in a variety of ways.
