Receiving online payments is very important to websites offering products or services online.

Nearly everyone has made online purchases for products but this can also be used to purchase services (I have one website where psycho-therapy can be booked online in advance using a calendar system and the session is conducted remotely via skype).

Other items such as subscriptions often require automatic recurring billing at the end of their current subscription.

Generally purchases are made by transferring control to an ecommerce provider such as paypal or sagepay or worldpay and then control is returned (with a success or failure code) upon completion. However this can also be done internally so that control never leaves the website and there is no branding on the part of the ecommerce provider.
